Athenian Full Size Helmet with Nike
Ancient Greek life size helmet from Athens. It bears an engraved owl on the cheekplates, the symbol of the city, as well as a figure of goddess Nike (Victory) on the crest.
Dated to 450 BC.
Athens was the richest and most famous city-state in ancient Greece. Its sea-faring trade reached from Gibraltar in the West to the Middle East. Together with Sparta and other allied Greek city-states, they defeated the much larger Persian invasion army in the 5th century BC. Athens is considered the city where Philosophy, Democracy and the Dramatic Arts were born.
